Warren Buffett has been credited as having said:
“Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.”Warren Buffett
We may feel that our actions (or inactions) today and tomorrow have little impact on the future. Some days we may feel unproductive or that we have failed. Other days may consist of us putting forth maximum effort to only experience minimal results in the short term. These seem to be the most frustrating days and weeks and months – the ones where we work hard, stay positive and stick to our plans yet don’t reap the rewards right away.
Some transactions and events bring us immediate satisfaction; many do not. What Warren Buffett is saying is to put forth maximum effort, work hard, set goals and stick to our plans – but realize that the results may not come to fruition for years.
You can probably think back to a time when the words or actions of someone led you to make changes in your life that have helped you reach the point you’re at today. Chances are, that person doesn’t know how big a difference they made. They may have even been having one of those days – where no matter the effort, the results just don’t come.
So, be the person who works hard and does what’s right, regardless of whether the reward comes now or later. Warren Buffett would probably also recommend investing now and doing so for the rest of your life in a consistent pattern – consistent investing has grown a forest for him.
Eventually, we all reap what we sow. The choice is ours as to what seeds we plant.
