What I Learned About Building a Brand from Crushing It! by Gary V

As I sit here with my wife, having just finished Crushing It! by Gary Vaynerchuk, I can’t help but feel grateful.

Gary’s words of wisdom, developed over the course of many years as an entrepreneur, are enough to inspire anyone to become an entrepreneur. For someone like me who never considered entrepreneurship as a life path, Gary has become instrumental in helping me find the motivation to go for it.

Crushing It! is basically a master class on brand building through the current social media platforms that dominate the market. He provides practical tips and information on how to make the most of Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, Voice (Amazon Alexa), and Musical.ly.

Though there are tons of practical ideas as to how to implement social media into your business strategy, Gary’s underlying message is to provide valuable content that people will crave by letting your personality show. He encourages entrepreneurs to stay on the offensive, trying out new platforms and services as they come along, not worrying about being first but being the best.

What I loved most about Crushing It! was all of the stories and experiences that Gary included from entrepreneurs who are making it happen. He breaks down how they got started and what they did to become successful, providing us with multiple blueprints to follow to find success.

The underlying theme from all who succeeded:

Be patient. Consistently produce content that adds value. Don’t focus on the opinions and/or judgement of others. Do what brings happiness and stay true to yourself.

These are all such simple themes and ideas to grasp, yet entrepreneurs at large struggle with them.

My biggest takeaway is to start now, using my free time to build my online business and personal brand – not for me, for my audience.

There is so much room for entrepreneurs to become more kind, more giving, more caring, more desperate to satisfy the needs of customers rather than their own needs.

Focusing on the customer and their experience will always win the long run. Strategies such as retail arbitrage, garage sale flipping, and freelance work can provide the necessary money to fund any entrepreneur while they build their brand and document their journey.

The great thing is that none of us have to be experts to get started. We can start right where we are.

I think of my experiences as an entrepreneur; I’m far from where I want to be. I haven’t made a ton of money selling online. I’ve made far more mistakes than I care to admit. But I’m learning. I’m practicing. I’m constantly trying new things and striving not to repeat mistakes of the past.

So, if you’re wondering where to start OR how to improve, it starts and ends with creating value for your audience.
